The story “La Tísica” (1910) is part of a corpus of texts from the Spanish-American literature of the centuries that problematizes the relationship between the countryside and the city from the failure of the discourse of modernity. The questioning of the possibility of a discourse that can harmonize these two spaces is the result of the contradictions that the utopia of modernity generated in the literate field. In this way, Viana”™s story works to expose skepticism about this project
and its corresponding failure.
